Oasis student Thomas grabs Nestle by the wrappers

Oasis Academy Immingham sixth form student Thomas Horton has won the award for the ‘Greatest Contribution to a Community’ at the inaugural national Oasis Community Learning Annual Awards, held in Birmingham on the 11th May.

Thomas, aged 17, has been determined to raise awareness about the plight of those people who are being trafficked across the globe. He purchased 300 bars of Cadbury Fairtrade chocolate and encouraged his fellow students to buy them, but return the wrappers to him. Thomas then sent all the empty wrappers to Nestle in an effort to persuade them to go Fairtrade. He has campaigned tirelessly to grab the attention of Nestle and motivate his fellow students and wider members of the local community to recognise that human trafficking is wrong and ruins lives. Local community coffee mornings were also arranged with only Fairtrade products being used.

He is now planning future campaigns and his goal is to make Immingham a Fairtrade Academy and indeed a Fairtrade town! His passion is infectious and he knows his actions can make a positive difference.

Oasis Community Learning Founder and CEO Steve Chalke said “This is fantastic. Thomas encapsulates everything Oasis Community Learning stands for. Part of the Charter we have just launched states that we are perseverance, we are hope and we are future, all of which describe Thomas’s efforts, and as such he rightly deserves this award.”

Commenting on his award, Thomas said, “I’m really glad to receive this award and I hope it helps to highlight the need for everyone to take the issue of trafficking seriously. I hope we can continue to put pressure on big companies like Nestle to make more of their product range Fairtrade.”

Our Education Charter statements encapsulate the core essence of what Oasis Community Learning is striving to achieve; the values in the statements express what motivates our educational emphasis and focus, while also describing the attitudes and attributes shared across our organisational family. These statements are our identity and DNA – they inform the reader or listener who we are, and what we want to achieve, both in an educational setting, but also in our holistic approach to each and every person we encounter.

The Oasis Charter , which spells out the things that motivate our educational focus and emphasis, can be found here, and is captured in the format, ‘We Are...’:

We are community – we are relationships
We are learning – we are achievement
We are unique – we are inclusive
We are enjoyment – we are perseverance
We are hope – we are future
We are Oasis...

Aye mate! And welcome to limbo! Problem: I have no idea what page you're trying to work on. You need to define a body ID in the template, then turn on the necessary rows and columns in layout.css. Arrrrgh!
